Wallpaper Removal in Dent, OH

Wallpaper removal in Dent, around a vent going through the wall.

Paper steamed and scraped rather than dry-pulled, paste washed off until the wall squeaks, then skimmed and primed. Adhesive left on the wall is what makes new paint bubble months later, and it is the step most quotes leave out. What you get back is a wall that is ready to paint, not one that is merely bare.

Dent (ZIP 45247) has rooms with something passing through the papered wall to outside — an extract terminal, an air brick, a boiler flue, a tumble dryer vent.

Each is a hole in the wall with a fitting round it, and each is a small careful job rather than something to scrape past.

The reason to be careful is that these are the points where the wall's weather-tightness is made. The seal around a flue or a vent sleeve is what stops water tracking in along the outside of the pipe, and it is frequently done in mastic that has hardened over the years. Scraping into it or working steam against it breaks it, and the result appears months later as a damp patch around a fitting that nobody connects to the decorating. On a boiler flue there is a further point that is not negotiable: nothing gets disturbed, sealed, blocked or worked on around it, because a flue is a combustion product route and it belongs to a qualified engineer rather than to anybody with a scraper.

Air bricks and passive vents have the opposite problem — they get blocked rather than broken. They exist to ventilate a room, a void or an appliance, and covering one with sheeting for a day is fine while blocking one permanently with paper, filler or paint is not. It is also worth noticing whether a vent that is now inside a papered wall has already been papered over by somebody previously, because that is a ventilation route somebody has quietly closed.

So the method is to cut a clean line around each fitting with a blade before anything is pulled, keep steam off the seals, and leave any hardened mastic alone rather than picking at it. Where a seal is clearly failed, that is worth reporting rather than repairing in passing — and where a vent has been covered over at some point in the past, that is a question about the room rather than a piece of paper to remove.

What wallpaper removal in Dent actually involves

The stripping is the easy half. What decides whether the finished wall looks right is the paste that comes off with it — wheat and clay-based adhesives stay water-soluble for decades, and a finish coat rolled over residual paste will bubble and lift months later, long after everyone has forgotten the paper was ever there.

The other half is what the paper was hung on. Paper applied directly to unprimed drywall bonds to the paper face of the board, and pulling it takes that face with it. There is no way to see this from the outside, which is why we pull a test corner during the estimate instead of quoting blind.

What is included in wallpaper removal in Dent

Test corner at the estimate

We lift a corner in an inconspicuous spot before we price anything — it tells us how many layers there are, what the paper is, and whether the drywall underneath was primed.

Steam and scrape

Steamed and scraped rather than dry-pulled, which keeps the drywall face intact wherever it can be saved. Scoring tools are used sparingly and only on stubborn vinyl, because they perforate the board as readily as the paper.

Paste washed off completely

Repeated hot-water washdowns until the wall squeaks under a hand rather than dragging. This is the step that gets skipped, and it is the single biggest cause of paint failure over stripped paper.

Skim coat where it is needed

Torn drywall face, gouges, and old paper texture skimmed flat and sanded. Quoted as its own line rather than buried in the price, because until the paper is off nobody knows how much there will be.

Sealing primer before paint

Fresh compound and exposed drywall paper drink paint at completely different rates. A full primer coat evens the porosity out so the finish does not flash patchy where the repairs are.

Furniture and floors protected

Steam and wet paper make a mess that dry work does not. Floors covered twice, furniture moved and wrapped, and the room put back together before we leave for the day.

Signs you need wallpaper removal in Dent

How much work a room is comes down to what is under the paper and whether anyone has painted over it. You can usually tell from the wall itself:

Seams lifting at the corners

Corners and edges are where the adhesive lets go first, and a lifted seam is a straight edge that will telegraph through anything painted over it. Once one seam has gone the rest of that wall is on its way.

Paper somebody has already painted

Paint seals the face of the paper, so water cannot reach the adhesive underneath. It has to be scored first, which is slow, and it is the single biggest thing that separates a half-day room from a two-day room.

A hollow sound when you tap it

Bubbles mean the paste has failed behind that area already. Skimming over it traps the void, and the first time the room warms up the whole patch moves under the new finish.

A border strip below the ceiling

Borders were usually hung over the wallpaper rather than onto the wall, which leaves two layers of adhesive and a hard ridge at the line. Removing the border alone always leaves that ridge to deal with.

Adhesive left behind is what makes new paint bubble months later. That is the step that decides whether the finish holds, and it is the one most often skipped.

Bulldog 5 step process

A premium finish does not happen by accident. It is the result of standards you can count on. The Bulldog Finish is our five-step standard for how every project runs and how the whole job should feel to live with — built to protect your home, keep the stress down, and leave a finish that is worth what you paid for it.

Before we ever open a paint can we confirm the scope, the surfaces, the colors, the sheen levels, the timeline, and what you are expecting. This is the step that prevents surprises. You should never be unsure what is included, what is excluded, or what the next steps look like — it is all itemized on the estimate before anyone starts.

The Bulldog 5-Year Warranty

Most painters warranty the paint. The manufacturer already does that. We warranty our workmanship — peeling, blistering, or flaking traced to our prep or application gets fixed at our cost, for five years from the day we finish.

Who you are hiring

Cincinnati painters since 2001

A family-owned crew out of Cincinnati, covering both sides of the river and seven counties around it. 3,200+ homes painted, and 11 painters on our payroll rather than picked up for the week.

We are not the cheapest quote you will get, and we will say so when the cheapest one is right — a rental between tenants, or a house listing in sixty days. What we are good at is work that has to last: Ohio Valley freeze-thaw, plaster in century-old houses, kitchens touched every day.

In their words

What homeowners say

The walkthrough at the end was the part that impressed me. They handed me a flashlight and told me to be fussy. Found four small things, all fixed the same afternoon, and only then did they ask for payment.
CConsuelo F.Exterior Painting
They talked me through which parts genuinely needed doing now and which could wait another two or three years. Ended up spending less than I'd budgeted because they were straight with me about it.
AAmadeus O.Exterior Painting
They power-washed, let it dry a full day, then came back. The crew that did our neighbors' place last year washed and painted the same afternoon and it's already flaking. Small difference, big result.

Jennifer Bennett

My name is Jennifer, and we've lived in our home for 23 years. Our most recent project was repainting my son's childhood bedroom before his wife came to stay with us while studying for her exams. We wanted to turn the room into a comfortable little sanctuary for her, and it felt like the perfect time to refresh the space.

When we first moved in, I spent the first five years painting the house myself every weekend. After our third child was born, we decided it was time to let the professionals handle it, and we've never looked back. Bulldog Painters are efficient, professional, and incredibly responsive. They come out quickly, provide an estimate, and are usually able to complete the project within a week. What I appreciate most is that they always follow up afterward to make sure everything was done to our satisfaction. They're loyal to us, and we're loyal to them.

Materials

Paint brands we use in Dent

The brand is chosen per surface, not per job. A ceiling, a cabinet door and a south- facing wall want three different products, and the one that suits all three does not exist.

Sherwin-Williams

A deep range with a commercial counter behind it, so the specific line a surface calls for is usually in stock rather than on order. That availability is most of why it turns up on the majority of our jobs.

Benjamin Moore

Advance is a waterborne alkyd — it flows out and levels the way an oil enamel does, then cures hard, without the ambering that turns old oil trim yellow. That is what puts it on cabinets, doors and trim.
